Obituary for Norma Joan Mathieson

Norma Joan Rogers Mathieson, passed away on September 23, 2018. Norma was born March 9, 1941 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was a member of the 1959 Graduating Class of Andrew Jackson High School, Jacksonville, Florida. Very active in USO after high school, she was Miss USO 1959. Norma was a wife, mother, community volunteer and administrative assistant. Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Richard “Matt” J Mathieson and her daughter, Bonnie J Myers. Norma is survived by daughters Cindy Mathieson and Nanette Borenstein, three grandsons, Peter, Thomas, and Casey Borenstein. Norma is also survived by her sisters Frances (Jimmy) Oglesby and Helen Vandergriff. When not moving from duty station to duty station as a U. S. Navy Wife, Norma was a volunteer with Girl Scouts and St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, later serving as the parish secretary for many years. Her volunteer work with the Gateway Girl Scout Council led to her being awarded the highest adult award, “The Thanks Badge.” Her volunteer work also lead to a ten year career as the manager of the “council store,” where she ensured that Girl Scouts and leaders could purchase uniforms, badges, and other program supplies. Norma retired from Ray Ware Hardware in 2003. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent in the form of a charitable donations to Community Hospice & Palliative Care or Jacksonville Humane Society.
Services for Norma have been entrusted to Naugle Schnauss Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 808 Margaret Street, Jacksonville, Florida, 32204. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 5 at 1PM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Immediately following the service, family and friends will gather at Coppertop Bar and Restaurant to remember her life.
