Charles Gilleland Strickler, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2018, after an extended illness. Born May 13, 1950 at NAS, San Juan, Puerto Rico, he was the son of Cdr. Kenneth D. and Betsy B. Strickler. He was a graduate of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. A member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, he graduated from the University of South Florida. Charles went through the management training program of the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, later going to work for Amtrak for 37 years. Charles was a long time member and Deacon of the Riverside Presbyterian Church. His great desire was to be of service to others, and he took pleasure in delivering Meals on Wheels through the church, and contributing his time at Community Hospice. An avid golfer, he served several years as a marshal on hole no. 5 at the TPC. Charlie, as he was known, leaves behind his wife Bette Cleland Strickler, her sons John Phillips Cleland, Jr, and wife Elizabeth, Andrew Christopher Cleland, all of Jacksonville, FL. Also surviving are his brothers Kenneth of Cambridge, NY, Thomas and wife Patricia of Knoxville, TN, and his sister Nancy of Winter Park, FL. He will be sorely missed by all his family and many friends, who mourn his passing, yet rejoice in having shared his life and company. A memorial service will be held in the Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park St., Jacksonville <https://maps.google.com/?q=849+Park+St.,+Jacksonville&entry=gmail&source=g>,Wednesday, February 7 at 11:00 am. The Rev. Stephen Goyer and the Rev. Carol DiGiusto will officiate. In place of flowers memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, or the Riverside Presbyterian Church.
